Jura J8 Twin espresso machine, Professional fine foam frother with HP3 connector and CX3 interchangeable milk spout, Milk pipe, Container for milk system cleaning, Syrup attachment, Filler funnel for ground coffee, Measuring spoon for ground coffee, CLEARYL Smart+ filter cartridge, Aquadur® water hardness test strip, JURA Wi-Fi Connect, Power cord

Setup & First Use

Before setting up the J8 Twin, choose a location that protects the machine from overheating. Ensure the ventilation slots are not covered. Place the machine on a horizontal surface that is not sensitive to water. The J8 Twin operates at 120V and must be plugged into a grounded outlet.

Important: What Goes In the Machine

Only use roasted, untreated whole coffee beans in the bean containers. Do not fill sugar-coated beans, ground coffee, freeze-dried coffee, chocolate, or any other substance into the bean containers — these will damage the grinders. If beans have been stored in the freezer, allow them to thaw for 3–4 hours before adding to the machine. Only fill the water tank with fresh, cold water — never warm or hot water, and never mineral or carbonated water.

Filling the Bean Containers

The J8 Twin has two separate bean containers, each with its own aroma preservation cover and grinder. The covers help retain bean freshness between uses. Remove the aroma preservation cover from each container, fill with whole bean coffee, and close the cover. The two containers can hold different coffee varieties — for example, one regular and one decaffeinated — which can be selected independently for any drink.

First-Time Setup

Connect the power cord and press the On/Off button. The touchscreen display will illuminate and guide you through initial configuration: select your language, select your preferred unit of measure (ml or oz), and set the water hardness level. To determine your water hardness, hold the included Aquadur® test strip under running water for one second, shake off the water, and wait one minute before comparing the color change to the guide on the packaging. Set the level accordingly in the menu (Very soft, Soft, Hard, or Very hard).

Installing the CLEARYL Smart+ Filter

After setting water hardness, the display will prompt you to insert the filter. Remove the water tank and open the filter casing. Insert the CLEARYL Smart+ filter cartridge, close the casing, insert the filter casing back into the water tank, and rotate it clockwise until it clicks into place. Fill the tank with fresh cold water and reinsert. The machine will automatically detect the new filter and run a rinsing cycle, flushing water through the drip tray. Empty the drip tray when prompted and return it to the machine.

Connecting Milk

Remove the protective cover from the professional fine foam frother. Connect one end of the milk pipe to the frother's HP3 connector, and the other end to a milk container or a compatible JURA milk cooler. For optimal milk foam, milk should be cold at 39–46°F (4–8°C). After the frother is connected, the machine is ready to prepare milk-based drinks. Always leave a receptacle under the fine foam frother after preparing any milk drink — the machine automatically rinses the milk system 8 minutes after preparation.

Tutorials & Training

The Two-Grinder Advantage

The J8 Twin's defining feature is its two independent bean containers and grinders. Each grinder can be loaded with a different coffee variety — a common approach is to keep a regular espresso blend in one and a decaf in the other, or two different single origins for blending. When preparing a drink, you can use one grinder exclusively, or blend output from both in any proportion using the Aroma Selection. Grinder names can be customized in the Machine Settings menu to help you keep track of which beans are where.

Brewing a Drink

Place your cup or glass under the coffee spout or milk frother (depending on the drink). On the start screen, tap the drink you want. Preparation starts and stops automatically — the display shows the name of the drink and progress. The start screen shows up to 19 specialty coffee options across two pages; swipe or tap the navigation arrows to move between them.

Aroma Selection — Customizing Before You Brew

The Aroma Selection symbol at the bottom center of the screen lets you change settings for a single brew before it starts, without permanently altering your saved preferences. Tap it, then select your drink within 10 seconds. From there you can adjust coffee strength, choose which grinder to use (100% from one container, 50/50 blend, or 100% from the other), or select a specialty option. Available specialty options include:

  • Double (e): Prepares the drink with two brewing strokes for extra body and intensity — available for espresso and coffee.
  • Sweet milk foam (S): Uses the syrup attachment to sweeten the milk foam — available for all milk-based specialty coffees.
  • Extra Shot (s): Prepares the drink with two brewing strokes at half the water amount, resulting in an exceptionally intense milk specialty — available for most milk coffees except macchiato and cortado.
  • Ground coffee (£): Bypasses the grinders and uses the powder chute instead — available for most specialty coffees.

Using the Powder Chute (Ground Coffee)

When using pre-ground coffee or a second variety not loaded in a bean container, use the powder chute. Add a maximum of two level measuring spoons of ground coffee — do not use coffee ground too finely, as very fine coffee can clog the system. After selecting the ground coffee option and pressing Start, open the powder chute cover, place the filler funnel over the chute, add ground coffee, remove the funnel, close the cover, and press Next to begin preparation. The specialty coffee must be prepared within approximately one minute of adding the ground coffee, or the machine will stop the operation.

Adjusting Grind Settings

Each bean container has its own grinder adjustment switch. Adjust the grind to suit the roast level of your beans — a finer grind produces more intense flavor; a coarser grind produces a lighter result. Only adjust the grinder while it is running — adjusting it when the grinder is not operating can damage the switch. To start a grind adjustment, open the cover of the grinder adjustment switch, tap a product to begin preparation, then turn the switch to the desired position while the grinder is running.

Saving Permanent Product Settings

To permanently adjust coffee strength, volume, or other settings for any given product, tap and hold that product on the start screen for approximately 2 seconds. From the settings menu you can change fill volume, coffee strength, product name, or preselect options like Sweet milk foam, Extra Shot, or Ground coffee. Changes saved here apply every time that product is selected going forward.

Repositioning and Replacing Products

The start screen can be personalized. Tap and hold any product for 2 seconds, then tap the Replace symbol to either reposition it on the screen or swap it for a different specialty. Hot water for green tea, for example, is not on the default start screen and must be added this way.

The JURA Cockpit

Tap the top of the display to open the JURA Cockpit — your central management hub for the machine. From the Cockpit you can access Machine Settings (green icon) for language, water hardness, display, Wi-Fi, grinder names, and timer options, and Maintenance (blue icon) for all maintenance programs. When a maintenance action is overdue, the relevant section of the Cockpit appears with a red background. Tap the message to go directly to the corresponding maintenance program.

J.O.E. App and Wi-Fi

The J8 Twin includes JURA Wi-Fi Connect, which enables control via the JURA J.O.E. (JURA Operating Experience) app on a smartphone or tablet. From the app you can start drinks remotely, adjust settings, and monitor maintenance status. To connect, open the Cockpit, tap Machine Settings, tap Connections, and follow the on-screen prompts. A QR code is available on the display to download the app if needed.

User Profiles

Up to 5 profiles can be created in the Cockpit under Display > Set Profile. Each profile can store 3 favorite specialty coffees with customized settings — useful in households where different people prefer different drinks and strengths.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Important Safety Note

Keep children away from the machine while any maintenance program is running. Maintenance products can be harmful if swallowed and irritating to eyes and skin — avoid contact. Use only original JURA maintenance products. Use of non-recommended cleaning agents — particularly in the milk system — can cause the frother to become blocked and detach from the machine during operation, with risk of hot steam discharge.

Daily — Drip Tray and Coffee Grounds Container

Empty the drip tray and coffee grounds container daily, or whenever the machine prompts you. Always empty the coffee grounds container while the machine is switched on — this is the only way to reset the grounds counter. The insert for the drip tray, the drip tray itself, and the coffee grounds container are dishwasher-safe.

Daily — Water Tank

Remove the water tank, rinse it with cold water, refill with fresh cold water, and reinsert. Never use warm water, hot water, mineral water, or sparkling water. Change the water daily for best results.

Daily — Milk System Cleaning

The milk system must be cleaned every day you prepare milk-based drinks. When the Cockpit displays a "Clean the milk system" message, open the Cockpit, tap the message, and follow the on-screen prompts. The cleaning cycle uses JURA milk system cleaner — add one dosing unit to the container for milk system cleaning, connect the milk pipe to the container, and follow the step-by-step instructions on the display. Use only original JURA milk system cleaner; third-party products will not remove milk residues properly and may cause the frother to fail.

8-Minute Automatic Milk System Rinse

The machine automatically rinses the milk system 8 minutes after any milk-based drink is prepared. Always leave a receptacle under the professional fine foam frother after making milk drinks — the auto-rinse will discharge water without warning when the 8-minute timer elapses.

Weekly — Dismantle and Rinse the Fine Foam Frother

Once a week, dismantle the professional fine foam frother and rinse all its components under running water. The machine provides step-by-step guidance for this in the Maintenance section of the Cockpit. Reassemble the frother and reattach it to the machine before the next use.

As Needed — Powder Chute

Remove and clean the powder chute for ground coffee regularly. The cover is also removable and can be cleaned separately. Rinse with warm water and dry before reinstalling.

As Needed — Milk Pipe and Frother Spout

Replace the milk pipe with HP3 connector approximately every 3 months. Replace the interchangeable milk spout CX3 approximately every 3 months as well. Replacement parts are available from authorized JURA dealers.

Descaling

The machine monitors usage and water hardness and will prompt you via the Cockpit when descaling is needed. Use only original JURA descaling products — Jura Decalcifying Tablets or JURA Liquid Descaler. Follow the on-screen descaling program step by step. Do not interrupt the descaling program once started. After the descaling cycle, a water rinse cycle will run automatically.

Machine and Coffee System Rinsing

The coffee system can be rinsed manually at any time by opening the Cockpit, tapping the Maintenance icon, and selecting Rinse. Place receptacles under both the coffee spout and fine foam frother before starting. The rinse stops automatically.

Exterior

Wipe the surface of the machine with a clean, soft, damp microfiber cloth. Do not use scouring powders or abrasive implements. Do not put any part of the machine in the dishwasher except the drip tray components and coffee grounds container.

Troubleshooting

No Coffee Delivered / Only Drips

If coffee is not delivering or is only dripping, the most common causes are an empty water tank, an empty bean container, or a grind setting that is too fine. Check the water tank level first and refill if needed. Check the bean container. If the grind is suspect, adjust the grinder adjustment switch one position coarser while the grinder is running and try again. Also confirm the drip tray is correctly in place — never remove the drip tray during a brewing operation.

"Not Enough Ground Coffee" Message

This appears when using the powder chute with an insufficient amount of ground coffee. Remove the portafilter and try again with up to 2 level measuring spoons of ground coffee. The specialty must also be prepared within approximately one minute of adding the ground coffee — if too much time passes, the machine cancels the operation.

Milk Foam Is Too Thin or Liquid

The most common cause is milk that is too warm. For best results, always use cold milk directly from the refrigerator at 39–46°F (4–8°C). Also confirm the setting wheel on the fine foam frother is in the correct position — the Milk Foam position and the Milk position produce different results. If the frother has not been cleaned recently, blocked holes in the frother tip can also affect foam quality. Clean the milk system as directed by the Cockpit.

Milk System Not Frothing / Frother Appears Blocked

Run the milk system cleaning cycle immediately. Open the Cockpit, tap the Maintenance icon, and select Clean the milk system. If the problem persists after cleaning, dismantle the frother as directed in the Maintenance section and rinse all components under running water. Only use original JURA milk system cleaner — residue from non-recommended products can block the frother.

Cockpit Maintenance Area Showing Red Background

A red background in the Maintenance area of the Cockpit means a maintenance action is overdue and requires your attention. Tap the red message to go directly to the corresponding program. Do not continue to prepare drinks while required maintenance is outstanding — this can affect coffee quality and machine longevity.

Display Showing Descale Prompt

Run the descaling program when prompted. Use only JURA-approved descaling products. Follow every step on the display and do not interrupt the program once it has started.

Machine Not Responding to Touch

If the screensaver has activated, touch the display once to return to the start screen. If the machine is unresponsive, check that it is powered on (the On/Off button) and that the power cord is fully connected.
