Make your morning coffee even easier with the Jura E4 Superautomatic Espresso Machine. Designed to deliver quality espresso and coffee at the touch of a button, the E4 offers a minimalist low-touch interface and programmable drink recipes. A separate hot water circuit also allows for Americanos or tea at the turn of a switch. What's In The Box
Jura E4 superautomatic espresso machine, Scoop, Machine cleaner tablets, Water filter (CLEARYL Smart), Filter installation tool, Power cord. Note: No milk frother is included — the E4 brews black coffee and espresso specialties only. Hot water spout for Americanos and tea is built in.

Setup & First Use

Place the E4 on a level, water-resistant surface with adequate ventilation. Plug in and press the On/Off button to start. On first use, the machine will guide you through initial setup: set language, water hardness, and whether to install the CLEARYL Smart filter cartridge. Insert the filter into the water tank using the included filter tool, fill the tank with cold water, and complete the rinse cycle.

Fill the bean hopper (10oz / 280g capacity) with whole beans. Close the aroma preservation lid tightly between uses. The E4's Professional Aroma Grinder (PAG) is stepless and adjustable via the grinder setting inside the bean hopper — the dial ranges from fine (1) to coarse (10). Start at setting 4 and adjust based on espresso extraction time.

The E4 specializes in black coffee beverages only — it has no milk frother or steam wand. It brews espresso, ristretto, coffee, lungo, and Americano. Double drinks are brewed by pressing the recipe button twice. A separate hot water spout provides up to 300ml for Americanos or tea, activated by rotating the switch on top of the machine.

The bypass powder chute on top allows you to load a single dose of pre-ground coffee — useful for decaf or specialty coffees without changing your hopper beans.

Tutorials & Training

Brewing Espresso and Coffee

Select your drink with the front buttons. The E4 brews at 15 bar pump pressure and uses Jura's Pulse Extraction Process (P.E.P.), which pulses the water pressure during extraction to coax more flavor from ristretto and espresso-length drinks. For longer drinks (coffee, lungo), P.E.P. is less active but the pre-infusion still applies.

Customizing Drink Volume and Strength

Press and hold any recipe button to adjust the volume for that recipe. Choose from 5 grind strength settings (mild to extra strong) via the button interface. Your settings are saved per recipe. Volume can be set in small steps between a short ristretto (~0.8oz) and a long cup (~7oz).

Double Shots

Press any recipe button twice in quick succession to brew a double portion — the machine grinds and brews twice for maximum extraction. Ideal for Americanos or a full mug of coffee.

Americano and Hot Water

Turn the hot water switch on top to dispense up to 300ml of hot water through the separate spout. For Americano: brew a double espresso into your cup, then add hot water to taste. The hot water circuit is separate from the coffee circuit for clean flavor.

Grind Adjustment

Only adjust the grinder setting while the grinder is running — this prevents jamming. Turn the dial inside the hopper one click at a time. Allow 1–2 drinks between adjustments to see the effect. If shots run in under 20 seconds, grind finer (lower number); if over 35 seconds or no flow, grind coarser.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Daily

The E4 automatically rinses at startup and shutdown. Empty the drip tray and grounds container when prompted (drip tray full indicator, grounds container full after approximately 16 pucks). Rinse the water tank every few days with clean water.

Weekly

Run a cleaning tablet cycle when the machine prompts — follow the on-screen instructions. Remove and hand-wash the drip tray and grounds container with warm soapy water. Wipe the exterior with a damp cloth.

Filter Replacement

Replace the CLEARYL Smart filter cartridge when prompted by the machine (typically every 50 liters or approximately 2–3 months in moderate use). The RFID chip in the filter automatically tracks usage. Using the filter extends time between descaling cycles.

Descaling

The E4 will prompt descaling based on your water hardness setting. Use Jura descaling tablets — do not use generic descalers. Follow the on-screen instructions. Descaling takes approximately 45 minutes. If using the CLEARYL Smart filter consistently, the machine may not require descaling.

Troubleshooting

Espresso Running Too Fast or Too Slow

Adjust the grinder one click at a time while the grinder is running. If consistently fast (under 20 seconds), grind finer; if slow/no flow, grind coarser. Only adjust one click at a time.

Machine Not Brewing / Error Message

Check the water tank is full and properly seated. Check that the bean hopper has beans and the lid is closed. Check the grounds container and drip tray — if full, empty and reinsert fully. Restart the machine if an error persists.

Grounds Container Stuck or Drip Tray Leaking

Remove and empty promptly when prompted — overfull containers can cause leaks. Ensure the grounds container is seated flush with the front panel before brewing.
