What's In The Box
Philips Carina 1200 superautomatic espresso machine, Panarello steam wand (pre-installed), Power cord. Note: Simplest Philips superautomatic — 2 drink buttons only (espresso and coffee). No LatteGo. AquaClean filter compatible but sold separately.

Setup & First Use

The Carina 1200 is the most straightforward Philips superautomatic — designed for users who want quality espresso with minimal complexity. Fill the water tank (1.8L, front-loading) with fresh cold water. Fill the 250g bean hopper. Plug in. The interface has just 2 recipe buttons (espresso and coffee) plus a steam wand for manual milk frothing.

The Carina has no display or complex menus. Customize espresso and coffee volumes by holding the button while brewing and releasing at your desired level — the machine saves the setting. Grind strength is adjustable via the dial inside the bean hopper (while the grinder is running).

The panarello steam wand handles all milk frothing manually. No automatic milk system is included — milk preparation requires manual technique.

Tutorials & Training

Two-Button Simplicity

Press the espresso button for a 1–2oz espresso shot. Press the coffee button for a longer 4–8oz coffee. Both are customizable for volume. The Carina is the closest Philips superautomatic to a traditional manual machine in terms of simplicity — if you just want one-touch espresso without menus or milk systems, this is the model.

Manual Steam Wand Frothing

Use the panarello wand for cappuccinos and lattes. Fill a pitcher with cold milk, submerge the wand tip, and activate steam. The panarello aeration style produces thicker foam suitable for traditional cappuccino. For flatter latte foam, hold the wand near the surface rather than submerged.

AquaClean Compatibility

The Carina is compatible with AquaClean filters (sold separately) — install in the water tank and the machine tracks usage toward the 5,000-cup no-descaling threshold.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Daily — Coffee Circuit

The Carina 1200 automatically rinses at startup and shutdown. Empty the drip tray and grounds container when prompted on the display. Always rinse promptly — overfull grounds containers cause errors.

Daily — Steam Wand

Wipe the panarello wand with a damp cloth immediately after steaming milk — dried milk is difficult to remove. Purge steam through the wand briefly after each milk session to clear the nozzle.

AquaClean Filter

Install an AquaClean filter in the water tank when prompted. The filter tracks usage via the machine's counter — with the filter installed you can brew up to 5,000 cups without descaling. Replace the filter approximately every 3 months or when the machine prompts you.

Descaling

If you are not using the AquaClean filter, descale when the machine prompts using Philips Saeco descaler tablets. With the filter, descaling may never be needed under normal use. Follow all on-screen instructions during descaling — the process takes approximately 30 minutes.

Brew Group

Remove and rinse the brew group under warm water weekly (for high-use machines) or monthly. The brew group slides out from the left side of the machine. Rinse only — do not use soap on the brew group. Reinstall when still damp.

Troubleshooting

Weak Espresso / No Crema

Grind is too coarse or dose is too low. Adjust the grinder one step finer (if the machine allows grind adjustment). Also check bean freshness — stale beans produce less crema.

Machine Not Brewing / Error

Check water tank level, bean supply, and grounds container. Ensure the brew group is properly installed. Most error messages are solved by checking these three items and restarting the machine.

Grounds Container Prompt Too Frequent

The grounds container counts pucks rather than measuring weight. If you're using very fine grounds or double shots, it fills faster. Empty when prompted — waiting causes overflow errors.

AquaClean Not Registering

Ensure the AquaClean filter is fully seated in the water tank and the machine has run a full rinse cycle after installation. The machine must detect the filter before it starts tracking.
