Setup & First Use

Place on a level surface. Fill the 1.8L water tank. Fill the 275g bean hopper. The 5500 has a full-color TFT touchscreen display — swipe and tap to navigate all 20+ drink recipes and settings. Follow first-use touchscreen setup for language, water hardness, and user profiles.

The 5500 is the flagship Philips home superautomatic — it adds extra features over the 4400: 20 specialties (vs. 14), Extra Shot programming to boost coffee concentration in any drink, 3 user profiles with deeper customization, and automatic LatteGo milk system rinse after milk use (vs. manual prompt on the 4400).

Tutorials & Training

20 Specialty Drinks

The 5500's expanded menu includes all 4400 drinks plus additional milk specialties, cold foam, and extended hot coffee options. All are accessible via the large touchscreen with intuitive swipe navigation.

Extra Shot

Press the Extra Shot button while selecting any recipe to add a double-strength espresso foundation — useful for long coffees, Americanos, or milk drinks where you want a stronger coffee flavor without changing the drink volume.

Automatic LatteGo Rinse

The 5500 automatically runs a LatteGo steam rinse after every milk drink — you don't need to remember to do it. The carafe still benefits from daily rinsing under the tap, but the auto-rinse keeps the milk circuit clean between uses.

3 User Profiles

Up to 3 personalized profiles — same as the 4400 but with deeper customization options including foam texture, preinfusion, and drink temperature memory per profile.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Daily — Coffee Circuit

The 5500 LatteGo automatically rinses at startup and shutdown. Empty the drip tray and grounds container when prompted on the display. Always rinse promptly — overfull grounds containers cause errors.

Daily — LatteGo Milk System

After preparing milk drinks, rinse the LatteGo by removing it and holding both pieces under running water for 15 seconds — the two-part design makes this fast. The LatteGo is also dishwasher safe. For a thorough clean, press the milk cleaning button on the machine which runs a steam rinse cycle automatically.

AquaClean Filter

Install an AquaClean filter in the water tank when prompted. The filter tracks usage via the machine's counter — with the filter installed you can brew up to 5,000 cups without descaling. Replace the filter approximately every 3 months or when the machine prompts you.

Descaling

If you are not using the AquaClean filter, descale when the machine prompts using Philips Saeco descaler tablets. With the filter, descaling may never be needed under normal use. Follow all on-screen instructions during descaling — the process takes approximately 30 minutes.

Brew Group

Remove and rinse the brew group under warm water weekly (for high-use machines) or monthly. The brew group slides out from the left side of the machine. Rinse only — do not use soap on the brew group. Reinstall when still damp.

Troubleshooting

Weak Espresso / No Crema

Grind is too coarse or dose is too low. Adjust the grinder one step finer (if the machine allows grind adjustment). Also check bean freshness — stale beans produce less crema.

Machine Not Brewing / Error

Check water tank level, bean supply, and grounds container. Ensure the brew group is properly installed. Most error messages are solved by checking these three items and restarting the machine.

Grounds Container Prompt Too Frequent

The grounds container counts pucks rather than measuring weight. If you're using very fine grounds or double shots, it fills faster. Empty when prompted — waiting causes overflow errors.

AquaClean Not Registering

Ensure the AquaClean filter is fully seated in the water tank and the machine has run a full rinse cycle after installation. The machine must detect the filter before it starts tracking.
