Philips Baristina Espresso Machine

Philips Baristina Espresso Machine

Make morning espresso simpler with the Philips Baristina Espresso Machine. The Baristina's claim to minimalist fame is its built-in grinder and unique dosing system, which grinds, doses, tamps, and brews—all with a single swipe of the portafilter. This specialized setup squeezes a machine and grinder into a compact 7-inch footprint perfect for small spaces or tucking alongside your other appliances. A removable drip tray lets you fit cups up to 5 inches tall, and milk is managed with an optional frother that does hot or cold foam. A single swipe is all it takes to make espresso in less than a minute with the Philips Baristina.

What's In The Box
Philips Baristina espresso machine, Portafilter (pre-installed), Power cord. Note: The Baristina has no milk frothing system — an optional matching Philips Baristina Milk Frother is sold separately at seattlecoffeegear.com. No grind adjustment is possible — the ceramic burr grinder is factory-calibrated.

Setup & First Use

The Baristina is Philips' most compact and unique superautomatic. Place on a level surface — the machine is approximately 7 inches wide, similar to a pod machine footprint. Fill the rear-mounted 1.2L water tank (removable). Fill the 170g hopper at the top.

The Baristina operates differently from all other Philips models: brewing is triggered by swiping the portafilter handle to the right. The machine automatically grinds, doses, tamps, and brews — then dispenses the spent puck when you swipe back. No menus, no settings needed for a basic brew.

Three control buttons on the top panel: espresso, lungo, and intensity boost. Volumes are factory-set and can be customized by holding the button during a brew and releasing at your target volume. The intensity boost button raises extraction pressure for a stronger shot.

No grind size adjustment is available — the ceramic burr grinder is factory-calibrated for the pressurized portafilter basket. Use any medium-roast whole bean. Very dark oily roasts can cause issues with the grinder over time.

Tutorials & Training

Swipe-to-Brew System

Unique to the Baristina: place your cup under the spout, then push the portafilter handle to the right until it clicks. The machine grinds and brews automatically. When the shot is done, push the handle left to pop out the spent puck into the drip tray. The entire process takes under 60 seconds from cold start.

Espresso vs. Lungo

Espresso button: short, concentrated shot (approximately 1.2oz). Lungo button: longer extraction (approximately 3.5oz). Both use the same grind — the lungo is not a diluted espresso but a longer extraction at the same grind setting. To customize volumes, hold the button during brew and release at your preferred level.

Intensity Boost

The intensity boost button increases extraction pressure for a stronger, more intense flavor. Use it when brewing with very light roasts or when you want more body. It is not recommended for dark roasts, which can become overly bitter at high pressure.

No Milk System

The Baristina does not include a steam wand or automatic milk frother. The matching Philips Baristina Milk Frother (sold separately) handles both hot and cold milk foam and pairs aesthetically with the machine. Without the frother, espresso and lungo are the only drinks available.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Daily

After each use, the drip tray collects spent pucks and drips. Empty and rinse the drip tray daily. Wipe the exterior portafilter area with a damp cloth.

Weekly

Remove and rinse the drip tray and grounds collector thoroughly. Clean the portafilter by swiping it through a cycle without beans to clear residual grounds.

Descaling

Run a descaling cycle when the machine's descale light prompts. Use Philips Saeco descaling solution. The Baristina does not accept an AquaClean filter. Follow the on-screen or button sequence in the instruction manual for the descaling procedure.

Troubleshooting

No Shot / Portafilter Not Activating

Ensure the hopper has beans. Check that the portafilter handle is fully swiped to the right — a partial swipe does not trigger the grind cycle. Verify the water tank is filled and properly seated.

Shot Tastes Weak

Use the intensity boost button. Check bean freshness — stale beans produce less flavor regardless of grind or pressure. Darker roasts produce more body; very light roasts may taste thin at the fixed grind setting.

Puck Not Ejecting

Swipe the portafilter fully to the left after brewing — the puck ejection requires the full return stroke. If grounds are clinging, run a water-only cycle (without beans, with an empty hopper) to flush residue.
