Fellow Opus Coffee & Espresso Grinder

Fellow Opus Coffee & Espresso Grinder

Fellow's first foray into espresso, the Opus offers both espresso and brewed coffee grind ranges in a single grinder. The Opus achieves this with both an outer 41-step macro adjustment range, and an inner 'fine-tune' range that allows you to adjust your macro grind setting 6 micro-steps in either direction. Functionally, this lets you switch from espresso to brew grind ranges in a single turn, with fine-tuning for flavor possible by removing the hopper and adjusting the inner range. Outside, the Opus features a compact, well-designed footprint thanks to its single-dose hopper and magnetic catch cup. Equipped with tap-to-grind timed dosing and unique anti-static technology cribbed from the larger Fellow Ode, the Fellow Opus is truly do-it-all multipurpose grinder.

Fellow Opus coffee and espresso grinder, Magnetic catch bin with removable dosing cup (fits 54mm and 58mm portafilters), Cleaning brush, Power cord.

Setup & First Use

Before first use, remove all packaging. Season the burrs by running 30–50g of whole beans through at a medium setting and discarding — this removes manufacturing residue and settles the conical burrs.

The Opus covers both espresso and filter coffee grinding — its macro and micro adjustment system allows precise setting across the full range. The macro dial sets the coarse grind range; the inner micro burr adjust (accessible inside the hopper, or via the collar on some versions) fine-tunes within that range for espresso dialing. Consult the Opus Gear Guide at fellowproducts.com for specific adjustment instructions for your unit's generation.

The single-dose design holds up to 3.5oz (approximately 100g). Load beans directly before each grind. The magnetic catch bin attaches to the base and includes a removable dosing cup that fits 54mm and 58mm portafilters directly — load the dosing cup under the grind outlet, grind, and transfer directly to your portafilter.

Timed grind: press the grind button once for a 30-second grind, twice for 60 seconds, three times for 90 seconds. Adjust grind amount (dose) by adjusting the grind time or using a shorter press-and-hold for manual control.

Tutorials & Training

Espresso Grinding

Set the macro dial to the fine end (espresso range). Use the micro burr adjust to fine-tune. Start at the manufacturer's recommended espresso setting (refer to the Gear Guide) and dial in from there. Espresso grind adjustment follows the same logic as any conical burr grinder: finer for slower shots, coarser for faster shots. Make adjustments in small increments — the micro adjust provides high resolution.

Filter Coffee Grinding

Set the macro dial to the medium to coarse range. For V60: medium-fine (approximately halfway between espresso and French press). For Kalita Wave: medium-coarse. For French press: coarse end of the range. For cold brew: coarsest settings available.

Dosing Cup and Portafilter Adapter

The magnetic catch bin includes a removable dosing cup sized to fit 54mm and 58mm portafilters. To use: place the dosing cup in the catch bin, grind your dose, then lift the dosing cup and set it atop your portafilter for a clean transfer with minimal mess. The anti-static technology reduces grounds clinging to the cup walls.

Timed Grind

For repeatable doses, use the timed grind function. Press the button once (30 sec), twice (60 sec), or three times (90 sec). Calibrate the correct time for your target dose by testing once, weighing the output, and adjusting the grind time or duration accordingly. Once calibrated, the timed grind produces consistent doses each session.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Weekly

Brush the grinding chamber and outlet with the included cleaning brush after every few sessions. Remove the catch bin and dosing cup and wash by hand.

Monthly — Burr Cleaning

Remove the upper burr per the Gear Guide instructions. Brush both burr sets to remove coffee oil buildup. Wipe the chamber with a dry cloth. Do not use water inside the grinder. Run 30g of beans after reassembly before brewing.

Grinder Tablets

Use grinder cleaning tablets (Grindz or equivalent) monthly for espresso use — oily dark roasts require more frequent cleaning. Follow with beans to purge before brewing.

Troubleshooting

Espresso Shots Too Fast Even at Finest Setting

If the finest macro setting isn't fine enough, use the micro burr adjust to extend the range further fine. Consult the Opus Gear Guide for the upper burr calibration procedure — the upper burr can be repositioned to shift the entire grind range finer.

Inconsistent Dose

Ensure the load bin is fully emptied each grind — use the grinds knocker to clear remaining beans from the burrs after each cycle. Weighing your dose before loading ensures consistent starting amounts.
