Rancilio Stile SD Espresso Grinder

Initial Setup

Place the Stile SD on a stable surface. Attach the portafilter rest and adjust its height to fit your portafilter — the adjustable fork accommodates standard 58mm portafilters.

Grind Adjustment

The Stile uses a stepless micrometric collar on the top of the grinder. Turn clockwise for finer, counterclockwise for coarser. The notches on the ring allow you to reference and repeat specific settings, but the collar can also be set between notches for micro-adjustments. For espresso, start around the 3–4 o'clock position on the collar and work finer.

Grinding — Portafilter Mode

The Stile SD is a semi-automatic grinder. Place your portafilter in the rest and press the portafilter button to start grinding. Release to stop. This hands-free activation keeps your workflow efficient.

Dosing Options

The Stile SD offers two dosing modes: Micro (timed, portafilter button activates a set time) and Microless (manual, hold button to grind). Switch between modes by accessing the User menu — swipe or press the button per the manual instructions.

Stepless vs. Notched Settings

Unlike stepped grinders, the Stile lets you dial between notches for precision. If you're between settings but shots are slightly off, try splitting the difference by positioning the collar between two notches.

Setting Up Micro Mode

In Micro mode, program the grind time by grinding a dose and noting the time. Store this in the machine — future presses will run the same duration. Re-program when changing coffees or noting dose drift.

Workflow Tip

The Stile SD's portafilter button allows hands-free grinding while you prep your next dose or rinse equipment. Position your portafilter, activate, and use the time to wipe down the steam wand or reset your scale.

Daily

Brush out the dosing chute and portafilter rest area after each session. Wipe the exterior with a dry cloth.

Weekly Burr Cleaning

Use the cleaning brush to clear the burr chamber of accumulated grounds and oil. For thorough cleaning, use a grinder cleaner product (Grindz or equivalent).

Hopper Cleaning

Remove the 300g hopper per the manual instructions. Hand wash with warm water and mild soap. Dry completely before reattaching.

Grinder Not Activating from Portafilter Button

Check that the portafilter is seated fully against the activation button. A light or off-center portafilter may not depress the sensor. Adjust the portafilter rest height if needed.

Inconsistent Dose Weights in Micro Mode

Re-program the timed dose. Grind a fresh dose into a container on a scale and time it — update the stored time to match your target weight.

Grind Size Drifting Over Time

The stepless collar can shift slightly with vibration. After dialing in, note the collar position visually using the notch reference marks.
