Rancilio Silvia PID Espresso Machine

Rancilio Silvia PID Espresso Machine

The Rancilio Silvia Semi-auto Espresso Machine is already a legendary and beloved espresso machine. Its commercial and cafe quality styling, endearing aesthetics, and solid performance have earned it a place on many countertops. Features like its no-nonsense interface, commercial style milk frothing wand, and 58mm portafilter add extra appeal. This Silvia also includes an Auber PID controller to help produce more stable temperatures than the standard Silvia. The LCD display on the PID controller is easy to use, and can also be used to program pre-infusion and as a shot timer! This really is the perfect way to combine durability and reliability of the original Silvia with a bit of extra modern technology to give the best espresso beans in the world the brewer they deserve.

What's In The Box
The Rancilio Silvia with PID Espresso Machine includes: Silvia espresso machine with Auber PID controller pre-installed, 58mm chrome-plated brass portafilter, single portafilter basket, double portafilter basket, backflushing basket insert, tamper, and scoop. Note: The PID is installed by Seattle Coffee Gear's service technicians before shipment.

Setup & First Use

Before First Use

Place the machine on a stable, heat-resistant surface. Fill the 67oz internal water reservoir. Run a full tank of water through the system without coffee to flush and season the boiler.

Setting Up the PID

The Auber PID controller is pre-configured for espresso at approximately 200°F. The LCD display shows the current boiler temperature in real time. Use the PID buttons to adjust the target temperature in one-degree increments.

Pre-Infusion Programming

The PID adds programmable pre-infusion and dwell time. Access the settings via the PID interface to set pre-infusion duration (typically 2–4 seconds) — this gently wets the puck before full pressure, improving extraction.

Shot Timer

Set your total desired shot time in the PID to automate shot stopping. The machine will cut pump power at your programmed time, removing the need to manually monitor each shot.

Pulling a Shot

Grind, dose, and tamp as usual. Press the brew switch. The PID will manage temperature and run your programmed pre-infusion and shot timer automatically.

Tutorials & Training

Taking Advantage of PID Accuracy

The PID eliminates temperature surfing. You can experiment with different brew temperatures for different coffees — lighter roasts often benefit from 201–204°F, while darker roasts can be dialed back to 196–199°F.

Dialing In Pre-Infusion

Start with 3 seconds of pre-infusion for most espresso blends. If you notice channeling or uneven extraction, increase pre-infusion to allow the puck to saturate more evenly before full pressure ramps.

Using the Shot Timer

Program the timer to match your target yield. For a 1:2 ratio double shot (18g in / 36g out), aim for a 25–30 second total shot time. Adjust grind to hit this window consistently.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Daily Cleaning

Wipe the steam wand after each use and purge briefly. Remove the portafilter, knock out the puck, and rinse the basket under warm water. Wipe the group head area with a damp cloth.

Weekly Cleaning

Backflush with the blind basket and espresso machine cleaner (Cafiza or equivalent). Run multiple cycles, then rinse with plain water. Remove and soak the shower screen in cleaner solution.

PID Controller Care

The PID controller itself requires no maintenance. Do not expose the LCD screen to moisture or excessive steam, normal use is fine but do not focus steam near the PID for long durations. The controller housing can be wiped with a dry cloth.

Troubleshooting

PID Display Not Responding

Check that the power switch is on and the machine is fully plugged in. If the PID screen is dark but the machine heats, the display may have a loose connection — contact SCG service.

Temperature Readings Fluctuating Widely

Some variation (±2–3°F) is normal. Wide swings may indicate a thermocouple issue or a PID setting that needs adjustment. Contact SCG for guidance.

Pre-Infusion Not Activating

Verify pre-infusion is enabled and duration is set above zero in the PID menu. If the pump activates immediately, the pre-infusion setting may have been reset.

Shot Timer Not Stopping the Pump

Confirm the timer feature is enabled in PID settings. The pump should cut when the timer expires. If not, check the PID wiring connection to the relay.
