Setup & First Use

Placement

Choose a safe, level surface where there will be no danger of overturning the appliance. Provide a minimum distance of 1.5 inches from the left and right sides of the machine to allow airflow for the vents.

Initial Setup Steps

  1. Unpack the machine.
  2. Connect the power cord and plug in the machine.
  3. Remove the water filter from its protective packaging and hold under running water for thirty seconds.
  4. Once fully saturated, install the filter into the water tank.
  5. Add coffee beans to the coffee bean hopper.
  6. Turn on the TK-02's back power switch.
  7. Follow the steps shown on the touchscreen.
  8. At the end of the onboarding process, short spurts of hot water and steam will come out from the nozzle — do not place your hands near the spout during the rinse cycle.

For Best Function and Taste

  • Fill the water tank with only fresh, still, room-temperature water.
  • Fill the coffee hopper with only fresh, room-temperature, non-oily, unflavored whole coffee beans. Never put anything other than whole coffee beans in the hopper, as anything else will damage the machine.
  • Never fill the pre-ground chute with more than one scoop of pre-ground coffee per brewing cycle.
  • Never fill the pre-ground chute with whole beans, as they can damage your brew unit.

Note: Coffee beans are used to factory test the TK-02, and it is completely normal for there to be traces of coffee grounds when you first unbox the machine.

Sleep/Power Behavior

After 30 minutes of non-use, the machine will enter screensaver mode. After 5 hours in screensaver mode, the machine will enter sleep mode. Before going to sleep, the machine will complete a cleaning cycle. In sleep mode, the machine lowers the temperature of the internal heating component to conserve energy.

Use the touchscreen to put the machine to sleep when not in use. Use the power switch on the back only after you have put the machine to sleep first — using the back power switch alone bypasses an intentional rinse cycle and powering-down process that is key to keeping your TK-02 functioning properly

Tutorials & Training

Brewing a Drink

Tap the name of a drink on the touchscreen to brew it. When a drink is tapped, the brewing screen is displayed and brewing begins immediately. You can add an extra shot while the coffee beans are grinding by tapping the "Add another shot" button. Drinks can be canceled at any time by tapping the X — all coffee grounds in the brew unit will be discarded into the waste bin.

Choosing Coffee Beans

  • Freshly roasted, quality coffee beans will provide the best flavor and extraction.
  • Terra Kaffe recommends freshly roasted coffee that lists a "Roasted On" date on the bag, not an expiration date, "Best Before," or "Use By" date.
  • Consume coffee beans within 30 days of the "Roasted On" date.
  • Do not use oily or flavored coffee beans.

Brewing with Pre-Ground Coffee

  1. Tap "pre-ground" on the top right of the touchscreen (the circle fills in when selected).
  2. Remove the pre-ground chute lid — do not remove the bean hopper lid.
  3. Using the included scoop, add one full scoop of pre-ground coffee to the chute. Do not use more than one scoop.
  4. Replace the pre-ground chute lid.
  5. Tap the desired drink.

Note: Never add pre-ground coffee when the machine is off, never use more than one scoop at a time, and when using pre-ground you can only make one shot at a time.

Using the Milk System

Attach the milk carafe to the right side of the spout. When storing the milk carafe, attach the cap of the milk hose to the magnets on the lid. To use a container other than the provided carafe, remove the hose from the carafe by gently pulling on it, then insert the open end fully submerged into any cup or container of milk.

Turning the milk knob all the way clockwise enables milk aeration (frothed milk). Turning it all the way counterclockwise dispenses hot milk without froth. The consistency of the frothed milk depends on the type of milk used and its temperature.

Espresso Profiles

With adjustable espresso profiles, brewing can be customized for specific bean types. The selected espresso profile will apply to all espresso-based drinks on your menu. Profiles allow adjustment of: Dosage (amount of grounds — increasing makes flavor more concentrated), Water (amount pushed through — increasing makes it less concentrated and counters sourness), Temperature, and Grind Size (a finer grind leads to slower extraction and stronger flavor).

Cleaning & Maintenance

Cleaning Status Indicators

Both the machine screen and the Terra Kaffe app display colored dots to indicate cleaning status: Green = No action needed. Yellow = Action needed soon. Red = Critical action needed before brewing.

Daily / Regular

  • Water tank: The machine alerts when refilling is needed. Open the left door, remove, refill, and replace (avg. every 10 cups).
  • Coffee beans: The machine alerts when the hopper is low. Refill with whole beans (avg. every 30 cups).
  • Coffee waste bin: The machine alerts when full. Open the right door, remove the waste bin, empty the coffee grounds, and replace (avg. every 8 cups).
  • Milk system: The machine prompts a clean after every milk-based drink. Remove the milk hose from the carafe, connect it to the drip tray, and press the check button on the screen twice to start the rinse cycle.

End of Day

  • Drip tray: Remove, empty, and rinse in a sink at the end of every day.
  • Standby: Turn off the machine by pressing the power button on the front panel.

End of Week

  • Brew unit and right-side chamber:

    Open the right door.
    Remove the waste bin.
Press/swing the lever to the right and slide out the brew unit.
Rinse the brew unit under water to remove excess coffee grounds (do not turn it upside down while rinsing).
Clean the inside of the right-side chamber, removing excess grounds.

  • Milk carafe: Wash by hand as you would for any food container.

Rinsing the Spout

The TK-02 will automatically rinse the spout when the machine is turned on, or put in and out of sleep mode via the touchscreen. Short spurts of hot water and steam will come out from the nozzle during cleaning cycles — do not place your hands near the spout.

Daily Checklist

  • Wipe down all surfaces to remove any dried milk or coffee.
  • Inspect the small crevices under the spout and brush with a soft bristle to dislodge any grime.
  • Remove the nozzle component by squeezing both sides and rinse with warm water.
  • Check the drip tray to ensure no coffee grounds have begun piling up in excess.
  • Ensure the telescoping spout handle can move smoothly.

Long-Term (Every 200–400 Cups)

After about 200–400 cups brewed, the machine will alert you to run a brewer cleaning cycle and a descale cycle. Failure to run these when prompted may lead to machine malfunction and may void your warranty.

To access automated brewer cleaning without a prompt: from the Homepage, select Menu > Cleaning > Clean Brew Unit.

General Cleaning Rules

Do not use sharp objects or harsh chemical products (solvents) for cleaning. Use a soft, dampened cloth to clean the exterior. For internal cleaning cycles, use cleaning agents specifically designed for espresso machines.

The milk carafe, water tank, drip tray, waste bin, drip tray cover, hopper cover, and pre-ground chute cover are not dishwasher safe. Handwash and allow to air dry.

Troubleshooting

The majority of issues with brewing on TK-02 can be remedied by following the instructions on the screen or in the Terra Kaffe app.

Power

If the machine fails to power on, first ensure that the outlet is functioning. If the outlet is not functioning, check the circuit breaker or fuse box for any tripped circuits or blown fuses. If there is an issue with the circuit breaker, remove other appliances from the circuit.

Water Supply

If you are experiencing an "Out of Water" alert after replacing your water filter, ensure you pre-soaked the filter per the "Prior to First Use" instructions. If you did, run the filter under running water to remove any trapped air. Replace and continue brewing. If experiencing a Water Level Low alert with a full water tank, ensure the float is not stuck at the bottom of the tank. Clean your water tank and reinstall it.

Drip Tray

If the drip tray is leaking, ensure the drip tray is installed all the way and the float is not stuck or blocked by coffee grounds. Ensure the machine is on a level surface.

Milk

  • If the machine is steaming but no milk is being pulled through the spout: ensure there is milk in the carafe and it is connected to the machine; ensure the hose reaches the bottom of the carafe; check that the milk is not too thick (e.g. creamer or half and half); turn the milk frothing dial fully counter-clockwise. If issues persist, run a descale cleaning cycle before contacting Terra Kaffe.
  • If the machine is not steaming or steam is slower than normal: cancel the drink, remove the spout assembly, and check for a blockage; check for missing components in the spout assembly; clean the spout assembly and reattach it to the machine spout.

Brewing

If the machine is brewing clear water, check to ensure there are beans in the hopper and the pre-ground chute is not blocked with coffee grounds.

If the TK-02 is brewing slowly, or brewing out of only one spout, select the Cleaning menu and then select the Clean Brew Unit cycle. If the problem persists, go to the Espresso Profile Menu and increase the grind size.
