Setup & First Use

Placement

Choose a safe, level surface with no danger of tipping. Keep a minimum of 1.5 inches of clearance on all sides for ventilation. Place out of reach of children.

Initial Setup Steps

  1. Unpack the machine.
  2. Plug into a grounded outlet.
  3. If using a water filter, hold it upside down under running water for 30 seconds, then install it into the water tank in the back of the machine.
  4. Add coffee beans to the hopper.
  5. Turn on the power switch on the left side of the machine.
  6. Follow the steps shown on the Quick Start Guide.
  7. During startup, short spurts of hot water will come out of the nozzle — keep hands away from the spout during the rinse cycle.

For Best Function and Taste

  • Fill the water tank with only fresh, still, room-temperature water.
  • Fill the coffee hopper with only fresh, room-temperature, non-oily, unflavored whole beans. Never put anything other than whole coffee beans in the hopper — anything else will damage the machine.
  • Terra Kaffe recommends discarding the first two drinks the Demi brews.

Note: Coffee beans are used to factory test the Demi. Traces of coffee grounds are completely normal.

Sleep/Power Behavior

After 1 hour of non-use the machine enters standby mode. After 6 hours in standby it enters sleep mode. If a drink was brewed since the last wake cycle, the machine will rinse before sleeping — otherwise it goes directly to sleep. Use the selector dial to navigate to Sleep in the main menu, or long-press the dial to sleep the machine. Only use the side power switch after the machine has been put to sleep first — using it alone bypasses an important rinse and shutdown cycle. The side switch is only necessary if the machine will not be used for an extended period.

Tutorials and Training

Brewing a Drink

Use the selector dial to scroll between drinks on the home screen and press to start brewing. An extra shot can be added while beans are grinding by rotating the dial clockwise. To cancel at any time, press and hold the selector dial. If canceled during grinding, the grounds will be used for the next drink.

Using the Selector Dial

  • Rotate to scroll between drink options
  • Press to select the item on screen
  • Press and hold for 2+ seconds to exit to the main menu
  • Press and hold for 2+ seconds from the home screen to put the machine to sleep

Choosing Coffee Beans

  • Use freshly roasted, quality beans for best flavor and extraction.
  • Look for a "Roasted On" date on the bag — not "Best Before," "Expiration," or "Use By."
  • Consume beans within 60 days of the "Roasted On" date.
  • Do not use oily or flavored beans.

Drink Settings Menu

Each drink (Espresso, Lungo, Americano, Drip, Hot Water) can be customized. Navigate via: Main Menu → Edit Drink → select drink → adjust Shots, Strength, Shot Volume, and Water Volume (where applicable).

General Settings Menu

Access via Menu → Settings. Options include Clock, Units (volume, time, hardness), Auto Wake/Sleep timer, Sound (on/off), Reset to factory defaults, and machine Info (shots, serial, brewer/descale/filter status).

Cleaning & Maintenance

Cleaning Indicators

The Demi's display illuminates one of four dot-matrix segments when maintenance is due:

  1. Brewer Cleaning
  2. Descaling
  3. Change Water Filter
  4. Remove and Rinse Brew Unit

Do not use sharp objects or harsh chemical products for cleaning. Use a soft, dampened cloth on the exterior. For internal cycles, use cleaning agents specifically formulated for espresso machines.

Brewer Cleaning

Eliminates coffee residue and oils from the brew unit, maintaining extraction quality. Use only automatic espresso machine-formulated brewer cleaner — unsuitable products may result in faults not covered by warranty. To run without a prompt: Menu → Cleaning → Brewer.

  1. Confirm you have brewer cleaning product (not descaler).
  2. Ensure the water tank is full and the drip tray is empty.
  3. Remove the brew unit and fill the circular brew basket with the cleaning agent.
  4. Reinsert the brew unit and follow the display prompts.

Descaling

Removes calcium deposits and limescale from the machine's internals. Frequency is determined by the water hardness setting. Use only espresso machine-formulated descaler. To run without a prompt: Menu → Cleaning → Descale. Place a large container under the spout to catch water; cover nearby surfaces.

  1. Confirm you have descaling product (not brewer cleaner).
  2. Remove and empty the water tank.
  3. Remove the water filter.
  4. Fill the tank with warm water and add the appropriate amount of descaler. Mix and let dissolve.
  5. Reinsert the water tank and follow the display prompts.

Water Filter Replacement

The machine will alert when it's time. Also recommended: hand wash the water tank at each filter change interval. To reset without a prompt: Menu → Cleaning → Filter.

  1. Remove and empty the water tank.
  2. Pull up on the old water filter.
  3. Hold the new filter upside down under running water for 30 seconds.
  4. Press the new filter down until fully seated.
  5. Fill the tank, reinsert, and follow the display prompts.

Removing and Rinsing the Brew Unit

The machine will alert when this is needed.

  1. Gently remove the brew unit panel on the right side.
  2. Press the lever on the brew unit to disengage.
  3. Slide it out and rinse under cool water, keeping it upright.
  4. Do not use hot water or soap. Mechanical lubricant on the brew unit is normal — leave it in place.
  5. Let it dry, then slide it back in until it clicks.
  6. Replace the right side panel.

Rinsing the Spout

The Demi automatically rinses the spout on wake and sleep cycles. To run manually: Menu → Cleaning → Rinse. Keep hands away from the spout during the rinse — hot water will come out.

Regular Maintenance Checklist

  • Remove and rinse the brew unit weekly.
  • Wipe down all surfaces after each use.
  • Brush the small crevices under the spout with a soft bristle.
  • Check the drip tray for excess coffee grounds.
  • Confirm the telescoping spout handle moves smoothly.
  • Inspect beans before adding to the hopper — remove any debris (rocks, twigs).
  • Clean the water tank regularly.
  • Dump and rinse the waste bin regularly — grounds left to sit can cause bacteria growth.

Note: The water tank, drip tray, waste bin, brew unit, and hopper cover are not dishwasher safe. Handwash and air dry only.

Warning: Failure to run cleaning and descaling cycles when prompted may lead to machine malfunction and may void your warranty.

Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting

Most issues can be resolved by following the on-screen instructions.

Power

If the machine won't turn on, verify the outlet is working. If not, check the circuit breaker or fuse box for tripped circuits or blown fuses. Remove other appliances from the circuit if needed.

Water Supply

If you see a "Push water tank in" alert after replacing the water filter, confirm the filter was pre-soaked per setup instructions. If it was, run the filter under water to clear any trapped air, then reinsert and continue brewing.

Drip Tray

If the drip tray is difficult to install, remove it and check the slot for coffee grounds. If leaking, ensure the tray is fully seated and the float is not blocked by grounds. Confirm the machine is on a level surface.

Brewing

If the machine is brewing clear water, check that beans are in the hopper. If the problem persists, run a Brewer cycle from the cleaning menu.

If brewing is slow, run the Clean Brew Unit cycle from the cleaning menu. If that doesn't resolve it, increase the grind size using the grinder dial inside the hopper.

If the machine is grinding too many grounds into the drip tray, contact Terra Kaffe's Customer Experience team.

If issues persist after trying the above steps, run a descale cycle before contacting Terra Kaffe.
