Chemex Glass Handle Pour Over Coffee Maker

Chemex Glass Handle Pour Over Coffee Maker

Designed with the same curvy sass and sustainable attributes as the Chemex Classic, but featuring the added borosilicate arm which gives the Chemex Glass Handle Series its name. Brew anywhere between 3 and 10 cups of coffee and watch as the Chemex Special Filter absorbs all excess oils, leaving behind a clean stream of coffee brimming with all the aromatic subtleties that are so often lost in standard brewing. This design dates all the way back to 1941, first created by a chemist working to patent his inventive design after a culmination of studied methods and tested concepts arranged to chemically produce the best flavors possible in coffee. True to his success, it's no wonder the Chemex is one of the most highly recommended brew methods around!

What's In The Box
Chemex Glass Handle pour over coffeemaker (borosilicate glass with molded glass handle). Note: Chemex Bonded filters sold separately — 3-cup uses FP-2 or FP-2N; 6-cup and larger use FP-1, FC-100, FS-100, or FSU-100.

Setup & First Use

The Chemex Glass Handle Series requires no assembly. Before first use, wash the glass brewer with warm water and mild dish soap using a bottle brush. Rinse thoroughly and dry. Unlike the Classic Series, the Glass Handle has no wooden collar or rawhide tie — it is one continuous piece of borosilicate glass with an ergonomic molded handle, making it fully dishwasher safe.

The Glass Handle Series is available in 3-cup (15oz), 6-cup (30oz), 8-cup (40oz), and 10-cup (50oz) sizes. The same level guides apply: the glass button marks halfway capacity; the bottom of the handle area indicates full capacity. On 13-cup models, the lower button marks halfway and the upper button marks full. Chemex cup measurements are based on 5oz cups.

Filters: The correct filter depends on brewer size. For the 3-cup Glass Handle, use Chemex Bonded Unfolded Half Moon filters FP-2 or FP-2N. For 6-cup and larger, use FP-1, FC-100, FS-100, or FSU-100 — available at seattlecoffeegear.com. Open the filter into a cone with three layers facing the pouring spout side. The three-layer thick side must face the spout to serve as an air channel during brewing.

Water: Use cold, filtered or spring water at approximately 200°F (just off boil, or rested 30–45 seconds after boiling). Do not use distilled or RO water without added minerals.

Tutorials & Training

Brewing Method — Same as Classic Series

The Glass Handle Series brews identically to the Classic: medium-coarse grind, 1 rounded tablespoon per 5oz cup, 30-second bloom, then a slow, controlled pour in circular or back-and-forth motions. Total brew time for a 6-cup batch is approximately 4–5 minutes.

Step 1: Grind to medium-coarse. Step 2: Place filter with three-layer side facing the spout. Step 3: Dose 1 tablespoon per 5oz cup. Step 4: Bloom with just enough water to wet the grounds — 30 seconds. Step 5: Pour slowly in circular motions, keeping water level below the rim. Step 6: Continue adding water to completion. Step 7: Remove and discard the filter.

Glass Handle Ergonomics

The molded glass handle allows for a comfortable, controlled pour even when the brewer is full. The handle is an integral part of the glass — it will not loosen or detach with use. The handle design makes the Glass Handle Series particularly easy to pour from at full capacity.

Measuring Brew Volume

The glass button marks the halfway point; the bottom of the handle indicates full capacity. For a 6-cup Glass Handle: half-capacity is 15oz; full is 30oz. Adjust your coffee dose to match your target volume — you do not need to brew to full capacity.

Coffee-to-Water Ratio

Standard ratio: 1 rounded tablespoon per 5oz cup, or approximately 7g per 5oz (about 56g per 1 liter of water). Adjust to taste. The thick Chemex filter prevents bitterness even at higher doses, so you can brew strong without over-extraction.

Cleaning & Maintenance

After Each Use

Lift and discard the filter. Rinse the glass brewer with hot water. Hand-wash with mild dish soap and a bottle brush, or place in the dishwasher. The Glass Handle Series is fully dishwasher safe — no parts need to be removed before washing.

Dishwasher

Place the Glass Handle brewer securely in the dishwasher, ensuring it is not bumping against other items. The glass is durable borosilicate but can break if impacted during the wash cycle. Top rack placement is safest.

Deep Clean

For oil or mineral buildup, soak with equal parts water and white vinegar for 15–30 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. A long-handled bottle brush is ideal for cleaning the narrow neck on larger sizes.

Storage and Use

Store right-side up on a flat surface. The Glass Handle Series is not microwavable. Coffee can be refrigerated in the brewer and reheated gently on the stovetop over very low heat.

Troubleshooting

Flow Too Slow

Grind is too fine. Adjust to medium-coarse. For the 3-cup Glass Handle, ensure you are using FP-2 or FP-2N filters — the standard Chemex filters (FC-100, etc.) may not seat correctly in the smaller brewer.

Filter Collapsing

The three-layer side must face the pouring spout to provide an air channel. Reposition the filter so the thick side is against the spout.

Coffee Tastes Off

Bitter: grind too fine, water too hot, or brew time too long. Sour: grind too coarse, water too cool, or underdosed. Adjust one variable at a time.
